A pale or orange patch on a colored towel can be a spot where the dye has been affected. One common source to check is skincare containing benzoyl peroxide, which can bleach fabric.
Before adding another cleaning product, look at what has touched the towel. A stain on the fabric and color removed from the fabric need different expectations: washing won’t put lost dye back.
Check skincare and bathroom products
Read the fabric warnings on acne treatments, cleansers, and other products used near your towels. Follow their directions and rinse residue from your hands before drying them.
Keep bathroom cleaners away from towel stacks and hanging towels. A small splash or transfer from hands is easy to miss in a busy bathroom.
Give colored towels a little protection
Store clean towels away from the area where cleaning products are sprayed or poured. After cleaning, wash and rinse your hands before reaching for a towel.
If someone in the household regularly uses a product with a fabric-bleaching warning, make that part of your towel choice. It’s a practical detail, just like choosing a size that fits the rack.
Would white towels help?
White towels can make color loss less noticeable, which is why we recommend considering them when benzoyl peroxide is part of your routine.

What should you do with a towel that has spots?
